Live Concerts to Enjoy at Home
We share the best live concerts and musicals you can watch from home! Enjoy tunes from artists like Chris Martin, Niall Horan, to OPM celebrities like Lea Salonga, Martin Nievera, and Gary Valenciano.
Every music and theatre fan enjoys a good show. There is nothing more enjoyable than watching live entertainment, and for music lovers, seeing their favorite musical acts in concert is an experience like no other. The same is true for musical theatre fans that line up for hours to catch the latest Broadway show.
However, the early part of 2020 has turned the live events industry on its head. The lights of Broadway have since gone dark for the first time since 9/11. There’s no definite date for when theatre doors will be open again.
The same is true for concerts and any major live events. Musical acts have canceled tours, and events like the I Heart Radio Music Awards. Even Coachella has called off its summer festival opting to postpone until the fall.
The entertainment industry outlook was desperately bleak. But it wasn’t long into the quarantine that artists realized they still craved a creative outlet. In the same way, people still craved entertainment. Soon, musicians and singers began live streaming from their homes and grateful audiences the world over tuned in.
Platforms like Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram made it possible for performers to still perform live in front of audiences and even interact with them. With such a diverse amount of material being released online, you can now discover new artists, genres of music, or even new musical theatre shows you might want to watch. There are several excellent choices for the whole family.
Here are some performances, concerts, and musicals you can enjoy at home.
Nurture your child’s appreciation for Original Pilipino Music and, if you can, help raise funds at the same time. The Bayanihan Musikahan event was started by National Artist Ryan Cayabyab who live-streamed some of his compositions online and invited fellow Filipino artists to do the same and help raise funds for the urban poor most hit by quarantine and loss of work.
Since the initiative began in March, several Filipino talents have already performed online, including Lea Salonga, Martin Nievera, Chito Miranda of Parokya ni Edgar, and Christian Bautista. The event is on-going throughout the next couple of weeks and still slated to perform are artists such as Jed Medela, Rachel Alejandro, and Gary Valenciano. You can check the Bayanihan Musikahan Facebook Page for their upcoming schedules and enjoy the videos of the previous streams.
The Shows Must Go On
It’s never too early nor too late to introduce your loved ones to the wonder that is musical theatre. Just because several local productions had to close and the lights on Broadway went dark for the time being, it doesn’t mean you can’t still enjoy musicals at home.
Broadway legend Andrew Lloyd Webber and Universal started a YouTube channel called The Shows Must Go On, which live-streams the composer’s musicals every Friday at 7pm BST. The videos are made available for 48 hours after streaming for everyone to enjoy.
The first offering was Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat starring Donny Osmond and Richard Attenborough. On April 10, the channel premiered the unforgettable hit show Jesus Christ Superstar just in time for Holy Week.
Live from our Living Rooms Jazz Festival
If you’ve wanted to introduce your kids to a new genre of music the Live from our Living Room Jazz Festival may be the perfect way to do it.
This fundraising concert brings together jazz musicians who performed from April 1-7 and featured artists performing in their living rooms like Christian McBride and Melissa Walker, Elad Kabilio, and Becca Stevens. The cool part about this initiative is that there are special shows geared towards children.
You can find the lineup and video links of the upcoming live shows on their website and catch previous live stream videos too. Be sure to check out the Podd Brothers show! The kids will love it!
Together at Home
The Together at Home initiative under Global Citizen has brought together musical artists of all genres live streaming music from their home. The initiative started with Chris Martin of Coldplay and John Legend the ongoing series now includes Niall Horan, Jennifer Hudson, and H.E.R. along with several others.
You can check out several 25-30 minute concerts on their YouTube page and keep your updates on to be alerted to any new live streams.
These shows are just the tip of the iceberg. You can also check out the Light in the Attic and Friends concert, Rob Thomas, and so many more. With artists pouring more and more of their hearts and passions online, you can find almost every type of genre of music and several musical shows to choose from. A good tip is to follow your family’s favorite artists on their Facebook and Instagram pages so you’ll be alerted when they go live.
During these uncertain times, give yourself and your family a break and enjoy some lighthearted and comforting entertainment and music.
